Markham thanks George for sending him Mr Pennie's address. Markham will also thank Mr Pennie for his generous gift. H again thanks George for his letter concerning Markham's ballad, The Road to the Gallows Tree. Letter is unsigned. He also includes a rough drift of poems he is working on.

Markham, Edwin, 1852-1940

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
